Alert! Thousands of Nonviolent Anti-Nuclear Protesters In India Facing Police Repression

My friend Umi, an anti-nuclear activist from Japan, alerted me to the situation unfolding right now in Tamil Nadu, southern India, where thousands of nonviolent protesters at the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant are facing tear gas, baton beatings, arrests, and more from police.

I haven’t found too much mainstream media coverage on it yet (anyone else?), so that means it’s up to all of us! Please share these images and show support for the courageous people in Koodankulam fighting for their health, their children’s health, and their lives.

The protesters are demanding an immediate halt to the loading of fuel into the reactor.  Last night, they slept on the open beach near the reactor, where they had staged marches during the day while police presence swelled and tensions reportedly rose.

In today’s state-violence crackdown, police have reportedly killed one person and injured many others.  Solidarity demonstrations are cropping up in cities throughout India.

Again, please spread the word, share these photos, and show support. If you have more information, please let us know!  More background, live updates, and a petition at Dialogue On Nukes.
